The river Po flows 1 km from the city and can be easily reached from the tree-lined avenue that gently enters the wide "Guastallese flood plain". In addition to housing restaurants, sports and entertainment facilities on its shore, the Guastalla bank of the river also offers trekking and horse-riding routes, completely immersed in an exuberant nature thanks to the important system of cycle-pedestrian tracks.
The new app “Terre di Po” offers a unique experience, allowing you to get information and suggestions based on your needs and travel preferences. The interactive map offers 9 different cycling routes - connecting all eight Municipalities belonging to the “Bassa Reggiana”. You can learn more about the points of tourist interest, thanks to detailed descriptions and an extensive photo gallery. In addition, large areas of naturalistic interest and wildlife refuges have been created, allowing visitors to pause near ponds and calm waters, in the shade of large trees and to unexpectedly meet water birds and hares. A walk in the area near the river Po “Golena” is a fascinating experience, which allows you to follow paths traced out by the ancient riverbed, the “Crostolina” - now largely underground - which marks the river’s changes over the centuries. It is precisely along these paths that you can experience the riverside atmosphere, amongst the fragrances of the vegetation, identifying tree and animal species. Among ducks, nocturnal and diurnal predators, hedge sparrows and great herons hunting for fish, you can see what must have been the characteristic environment of the large woods along the river Po banks - an unchanged ecosystem over the centuries, until the spread of the massive poplar growing industry.
