Ex Municipal Slaughterhouse

Novellara’s Macello Comunale (Municipal Slaughterhouse) was built in 1930 in what was then a suburban area, along a consortium road, in compliance with the hygienic regulations of the time.

The project, drawn up by the Milanese company Ing. G. De Franceschini & C. in 1929, was carried out by the Società Anonima Cooperativa Edile of Novellara. The construction works remained substantially faithful to the original design, except for the enlargement of the offal room and the addition of a utility room.

The building features a symmetrical layout, developing along the central entrance axis, and is divided into two courtyards connected by a wide corridor leading to the two large rooms where pigs and cattle were traditionally slaughtered.

Inside these rooms, visitors can still see remains of the old carousels once used for transporting animals, as well as sections of the original tiled wall covering.

Recently restored and reopened to the public, the former slaughterhouse has been returned to the community as a space for temporary exhibitions and cultural events.

Guided tours for groups of at least 15 people can be arranged by reservation, using the contacts provided.
