St. Stefano's Church - Chiesa di Santo Stefano

Located in Poviglio’s main square, Piazza Umberto I, this church dedicated to Saint Stephen was built between 1250 and 1300.

In the past, access from the inside was reserved exclusively for the local feudal lord while worshippers entered through a side door. Renovated in the 19th century, the Chiesa di Santo Stefano features a broad, bright bipartite façade, divided by pilasters and facing west. Its central section is elevated and crowned by a triangular pediment, flanked by lateral arched pediments with pyramidal acroteria at their peaks.

The interior is divided into three aisles, and above the main altar hangs a painting by Carlo Zatti. The 15th-century bell tower has been rebuilt several times; on its first floor, visitors can admire a medieval fresco of Our Lady and the Angels.
