The Vestiges of the Gonzagas

The land is historically bound to the Gonzaga dynasty, which left deep traces of its presence, such as noble estates and fortresses, as well as major reclamation works that allowed agriculture and local economy to thrive.

Listed below are the places in the Bassa Reggiana that still today bear witness to, and tell the story of, the vicissitudes of this powerful family,  thanks to their preserved splendour:

Novellara: the Rocca, housing the Gonzaga Museum within its walls - open to visitors - 

Reggiolo: the Medieval Rocca, with its castle and walls - open to visitors from the outside only -

Guastalla: the Ducal Palace, overlooking Piazza Mazzini, where the Statue of Ferrante Gonzaga stands - open to visitors -

Luzzara: the Church and the former Convent of the Augustinians - open to visitors from the outside only - 

Gualtieri: the ancient hydraulic structure (It. chiavica) known as the Torrione, commissioned by Cesare Gonzaga - open to visitors -
