La Golena: Guastalla's Floodplain
River Po flows just one kilometre from the town of Guastalla and can be easily reached via the tree-lined avenue Viale Po, which gently leads visitors into the expansive floodplain. In addition to hosting several restaurants, sport and leisure facilities along its shores, the River Po in Guastalla also offers trekking routes and horseback riding paths, all completely immersed in a vibrant natural environment, thanks to an extensive network of cycling and pedestrian routes.
Walking through the Po’s floodplain is a captivating experience, guided by well-marked trails equipped with signage that illustrates the landscape’s most significant natural and historical features, as well as its traditional uses. This work was carried out by Cooperativa EDEN, a cooperative founded in 1987 and dedicated to the promotion and restoration of the environment, with a particular focus on ecological education. Along these routes, visitors can soak in the River’s unique atmospheres, breathing in the fragrances of its vegetation, identifying various tree species, and spotting wildlife - especially birds, that here nest and forage for food. Ducks, nocturnal and diurnal birds of prey, woodland perching birds and large herons hunting for fish: together, they evoke the atmosphere of the vast riverine forests that once flourished along the Po—an ecosystem that remained largely undisturbed for centuries, until the arrival of intensive industrial poplar farming.
> Sentiero della Crostolina - The Crostolina path
The Crostolina path is designed for both adults and children, and its total length can be adjusted to suit individual needs. Children can follow the route Salsòn - Sentiero Crostolina, while adults may extend this path by adding a stop to the flooded willow grove of the Crostolina channel, or exploring other areas of its riverbed. Each itinerary - ranging from a short, one-hour walk of about two kilometres to longer routes of up to eight kilometres- offers views over the Crostolina’s riverbed, which features restored natural areas and native plant species. Along the way, visitors will encounter specially created wetland areas where various animal species can be observed, especially birds. The presence of water meadows also adds botanical interest, as they host some rare flowering plants.
> Vie alzaie
Starting from the caravan park, visitors can follow the river terraces either by bike or on foot, all the way to the Crostolo Nuovo. From there, they can reach Lido Po and continue along the route Bosco di Freddi (Freddi’s wood) - Lanca del Pennello (Brush Oxbow Lake) - Isola del Peccato (Sin Island) - Crostolina - Bugno della Margherita - Foce del Crostolo Vecchio (Mouth of the Crostolo Vecchio) and then return to the caravan park via the pedestrian and cycling path along Viale Po. This itinerary, recommended for adults, covers a distance of about ten kilometres - roughly a 2.5-four walk or a one-hour bike ride. The starting point can also be shifted to Lido Po, depending on preference. Throughout the journey, visitors cross the main river embankments that protect and embrace the town of Guastalla, as well as the vie alzaie (paths that follow waterways), flanked by hedgerows and tree lines made up of native species, overlooking riverbeds and restored oxbow lakes.
> Bosco di Freddi - Freddi’s Wood
This two-hectare woodland holds special ecological and educational value, as it features all the typical species of floodplain areas (White poplar, Black poplar, White Mulberry, Ash trees, English Oak, Black Alder). Though planted by human hands, the trees are arranged in a seemingly natural, unstructured layout.
> Isola del Peccato - Sin Island
Sin Island is a 12-hectare area composed of the remnants of an ancient, naturally occurring riparian forest of hygrophilous species, alongside a nearby zone reshaped through the excavation of an old oxbow lake and the creation of a small hill that serves as a refuge for mammals during floods. Among the typical native species found here are Hen harriers, Montagu’s harriers, Great egrets and Kingfishers.
