Tomb of Augusto Daolio (Municipal Cemetery)

Completed during the 2019 edition of the NomadIncontro, the annual gathering held in Novellara, this mural was created in memory of Augusto Daolio, the unforgettable singer and frontman of the local band I Nomadi.

The work, entrusted to street artist Alessio-B, was painted on the side wall of a building, where now - against a light-blue background - shines a gigantic black-and-white portrait of a thoughtful Augusto Daolio.

In the town cemetery lies the singer’s tomb, following his sudden passing in October 1992. The tombstone is surrounded by objects, drawings, stones, and flowers - a sort of pop-art shrine, lovingly shaped by the devotion of his fans, who still come from all over Italy to leave a token, a thought, a small memento - something to tangibly express their affection for “big brother” Augusto. On his tomb rests a bit of everything: smurfs, maps, lighters, rings. Two steel herons recall Augusto’s efforts to protect these local birds - which, thanks to him, now thrive undisturbed in a nearby beautiful ecological reserve -, along with a football, sketches, photos, and a bonsai. On a piece of driftwood carved by the waters of the River Po, the Fan Club di Carmagnola (Carmagnola Fan Club) has engraved the phrase: “il Fiume riporta quello che trova” (the River brings back what it finds).

In Novellara there is also a green area named in his honour - the “Augusto Daolio” Park, a place devoted to culture and leisure. Thanks to a project born from the collaboration between the Municipal Administration and the Istituto Chierici, the park now hosts ten “literary benches” (panchine letterarie), which are benches in the shape of open books, decorated with drawings by students’, who - after a day immersed in Augusto and the Nomadi’s works, music and memories - have elaborated a personal and intimate artistic tribute to the beloved singer.
