Monastery of San Benedetto

Following a bequest by Duchess Eleonora d’Este, the Benedictine cloistered nuns inherited the Monastery in the second half of the 16th century, and their presence endured until 1798, when the order was suppressed by the Cisalpine Republic. A school for postulants was already active inside the monastery from 1553. After its closure in 1798, the building was acquired by the Municipality of Brescello in 1873 and converted into a barracks. In the early 20th century, the wing overlooking Via I Maggio was used as an elementary school, while the remaining spaces were divided into private homes and small artisan workshops. In 1933, the south and east wings were demolished, while the central became the Casa del Fascio - the local headquarters and social center of the National Fascist Party - also hosting spaces for meetings and orchestral rehearsals.

Today, completely restored, the complex serves as the Municipal Cultural Center. It houses the "Peppone e Don Camillo" Museum, the “Albino Umiltà” Archaeological Museum, the “Antonio Panizzi” Municipal Library, the Municipal Council Chamber, the “Prampolini/Mingori” Civic Hall (dedicated to the historic meeting between the socialist leader Camillo Prampolini from Reggio and Brescello’s Pompeo Mingori), the “Carlo Zatti” Civic Hall (named after the painter and late-19th-century mayor of Brescello), as well as the offices of the local Municipal Police.
